Project Overview
PAC was responsible for the procurement of 142 new valves to be installed at several sites as part of the Eastern Gas Pipeline reversal project.
The Eastern Gas Pipeline (EGP) was commissioned in 2000 to supply natural gas from Victoria to the Sydney region. The EGP is a large DN450 (18 Inch) pipeline with a high operating pressure. Jemena is undertaking a project to reverse flow the (EGP) south of the Kembla Grange Meter Station (KGMS), to allow the supply of gas into the Victorian and New South Wales gas markets from a new LNG import terminal to be based at Port Kembla. This project also includes the port process facilities, mid-line nitrogen injection and end-of-line metering prior to connecting to the EGP.
Our involvement in the project
As part of the Jemena project, PAC was responsible for the procurement of 142 new valves of various types, sizes, classes and end connection to be installed at several sites as part of the EGP reversal project. The sites included:
- Kembla Grange Metering Station & MLV
- Michelago Compressor Station
- Mila Compressor Station
- Longford Compressor Station
- Port Kembla Gas Terminal Process Facility
- Port Kembla Pipeline Valves
Our supply for the Port Kembla Gas Terminal Process Facility included:
- 3 of actuated spring return, DN400 (16 Inch) ball valves, 2 in class 900 and 1 in class 1500
- 1 of double acting actuated, DN450 (18 Inch) buried service ball valve in class 1500
- 7 of DN50 (2 Inch), class 900, manual plug valves
- 2 of DN400 (16 Inch), class 900, dual plate wafer style check valves
- 7 of DN40 (1.5 Inch), class 1500, double block, and bleed valves
- 17 manual ball valves in various sizes, from DN20 (3/4 Inch) to DN450 (18 Inch) in various classes 900 and 1500
PAC managed the acquisition and manufacturing of these valves from various partners overseas, located primarily in Italy. We designed, built, and tested the actuator control systems for the five actuated valves, four of which are used in the Port Kembla Gas Terminal Process Facility in-house at PAC’s facility.
All actuated valves utilised ball valves from our partner Zavero (the primary supplier of valves for this project), and 80% of the actuators were supplied by Rotork. These valued partners ensure reliable, high quality equipment, as well as industry-leading expertise for both PAC and our customers.
PAC worked with our partners to complete additional hydrostatic testing on many valves that were larger than DN150 (6 Inch) to ensure that they performed as expected after shipping.
Challenges
One of the main challenges during this project was managing the logistics of several valves larger than anything we have dealt with previously.
